Gdańsk played a prominent part in the mediaeval amber trade, both as a place of amber excavation and processing. Do not miss the Amber Museum (located in the Old Town, in Katownia, the old prison just opposite the Golden Gate at the very entrance to Długa Street) with some astonishing examples of amber art. The lovely gallery-like amber shops along St Mary's Street and the Waterfront are also worth a visit.

The lovely gallery-like amber shops along St Mary's Street and the Waterfront are also worth a visit.
To Hel and back in one day
Hel, 100 kilometers north of Gdańsk is a narrow spit of land which stretches to separate the bay of Gdańsk, bright with multi-coloured sails of wind-surf boards, from the rolling seas of the mighty Baltic Sea. Keep your eyes open as you walk for kilometers along pristine golden beaches. You might be lucky and find some amber washed up on the sand.
At the tip of Hel peninsula there are restaurants where you can eat the freshest fish you'll ever taste or buy
a pancake smothered with cream and chocolate. The maritime museum in St Peter's church has an observation tower and overlooks the seal rehabilitation centre with open air pools for the recovering animals.
You can travel by road or rail but the most exciting way to approach Hel and to realise the importance of the sea to Tri-City is to go across the water on the ferry from Gdańsk or Gdynia.
